Wick Award Community Party at Gasgoyne 2 Community Hall

Our first community party held at Gasgoyne Community Hall was a tremendous success despite the downpours. More than 60 local residents braved the rain for the fun and to find out more about Wick Award.

We were aiming for an outdoors festival feel but shifted into the community hall once the rain set in.

Outdoor fun included play activities provided by Albion Kids’ Show, football skills delivered by our friends at Hackney Wick FC and a barbecue shifting 100 burgers and 120 sausages thanks to our heroic barbecue volunteers (Sally, John, Fatima and Kris).

Indoors the stage was set for local bands including 50 and local young performers. Young people took to the decks with DJMC Academy learning how to DJ themselves.

Guests enjoyed making and eating their own fruity desserts and learning more about healthy eating from Shoreditch Trust. Nearly all young guests went home looking very different thanks to some very sparkly face-painting.

The event was supported by a range of stalls including Hackney Health Hubs, Big Local Trust and Hackney Consultation Team.

Wick Award took the opportunity to consult local residents about local opportunities for young people and for improving wellbeing and promoted our new training opportunity for local people who are interested in becoming Community researchers.

We hope that this will be the first of many events bringing local residents together and making Hackney Wick even better.

Many thanks to everyone who made the event such a success including our friends from Hackney Quest, Hackney Health Hubs, Hackney Homes, Shoreditch Trust, Hub67, Hackney Wick FC, The Crib and the Hackney Wick residents who turned out on a stormy day.
